読独について
status: open

Yondoku (読独 — "reading alone") is a collection of tiny Japanese comic strips translated into English. Each strip is a 4-koma: four panels, one feeling, no payoff bigger than the moment itself. ♪(▽ˋ)

the inspiration

The strips here are inspired by @dkmavesss on TikTok, who posts short Japanese strips with English translations. There's a specific kind of humor in those strips — observational, quiet, deeply lived-in. A man stands in front of a vending machine for eleven minutes. A salaryman sleeps two stops past his station. A junior employee agonizes over where to lay the hanami tarp. Nothing happens. Everything happens.

the format

4-koma (四コマ) is a Japanese comic format with exactly four panels, traditionally read top-to-bottom. It originated in newspapers and remains one of the most common comic formats in Japan. The structure — 起承転結 (introduction, development, twist, conclusion) — gives every strip a complete arc in under thirty seconds of reading.

On Yondoku, panels are presented one-per-row for comfortable mobile reading, with the original Japanese rendered beneath each English line so you can pick up a phrase or two if you want to.

about the translations

Every translation here is a small interpretation. Some Japanese rhythms — the dragged-out 「えー」, the apologetic 「あの…」, the way a sentence trails into a soft 「ね」 — don't quite have English equivalents. We try to land the feeling. Sometimes that means dropping a word. Sometimes that means adding one. Always: faithful to the joke.

a note on the strips

The strips currently on Yondoku are samples written in the spirit of the genre, not direct reproductions. If you'd like to see the original work that inspired this site, please support @dkmavesss directly.
